KH Dormitory

Located in Muar, Johor, this employee dormitory was conceived as a contemporary residential environment that prioritises comfort, functionality, and architectural character. The design adopts a clean and modern language, transforming a practical accommodation facility into a welcoming living environment that promotes the well-being of its occupants.

The building composition is defined by a series of interlocking rectilinear volumes, articulated through varying shades of grey to create depth, contrast, and visual sophistication. Carefully positioned darker accent panels further break down the overall massing into smaller geometric forms, introducing rhythm and enhancing the building’s three-dimensional expression. This layered façade treatment achieves a refined architectural identity while maintaining a sense of simplicity and restraint.

A defining feature of the development is the incorporation of vertical louvred screens, which provide both functional and aesthetic benefits. Beyond contributing to the building’s contemporary appearance, these elements create dynamic patterns of light and shadow throughout the day, enriching the internal spaces while enhancing solar control and privacy. At the main entrance, full-height glazing combined with vertical screening establishes a transparent and welcoming arrival experience, reinforcing the building’s modern residential character.

The quality of the living environment was a key consideration throughout the design process. Each accommodation unit is provided with windows that maximise natural daylight and ventilation, creating bright, comfortable, and healthy living spaces. Complementing the built environment, landscaped green areas surrounding the dormitory offer opportunities for relaxation, social interaction, and recreational activities, fostering a stronger sense of community among residents.

Balancing practicality with architectural quality, the project demonstrates how employee accommodation can be elevated through thoughtful design. Through its contemporary aesthetic, efficient planning, and emphasis on occupant comfort, the dormitory provides a dignified and enjoyable living environment that supports both the daily needs and overall well-being of its residents.
